The Best Trends (Ever)!

Once in a while a trend comes along that you NEVER EVER want to get rid of, there’s also those trends that make you want to light it on fire at first glance! Here’s some of the trends we (I) never want to go away! Lucky for me all are wearable in the Caribbean :

1.The Button Down

BeFunky Collage2

As simple as it seems, the button down is a classic and a closet staple for both guys and girls. It can be long sleeved, short sleeved, buttoned at the front or back, solid or prints, casual, dressed up, peter pan collar, frilled collar . Whatever it is, the button down can do it, need I say more?A simple white button down is a MUST HAVE btw…

2. Jumpsuits

Solange-Knowles

I’ve never met a jumpsuit I didn’t like, its made its way to red carpets, weddings, the office, the club. You name it the jumpsuit’s been there and shows no sign of leaving us and I’m glad for that. ¬†Its truly the perfect go to outfit when you can’t figure out what to wear, the hardest part might be choosing your favourite one!

3. Ballet Flats

asos-little-munchkin-ballet-flats asos-live-moment-wide-fit-ballet-flats TB_50008691_253_C

Whatever your personal style is, there’s a pair of ballet flats out there made just for you. And you can’t deny how comfy they are because heels all the time can be a pain in the a**, its the best combo of comfy and chic so you never have to compromise either!

4. The Little Black Dress

BeFunky Collage3

The LBD and timeless go hand in hand, and if you don’t own one, well, you know what to do. Seriously, it will never ever go out of style and appropriate for any and every occasion possible! From barely there like J.lo to a dress you can wear at the office, a LBD won’t disappoint.

5. Boyfriend Jeans

From its appearance circa 2005 (remember Rihanna’s “Pon D Replay”) there’s no sign of the trend ¬†going away and honestly why should it? It has a weird didn’t try all that hard to look this good appeal that I love and my favourite fashion bloggers (Micah and Julie) make me love it even more. And yes, bf jeans do come in unripped versions.

6. Statement Jewellery

4-colors-good-quality-NEW-style-Fashion-Vintage-Unique-collar-pendant-Chunky-Necklace-Statement-Jewelry-for.jpg_640x640earring rings

This dates back to ancient Egypt where they adorned themselves in cuff bracelets, statement necklaces and flashy dangling earrings. Fastforward to the 2016 and not much has changed, but now its used to liven up an otherwise not so lively outfit or to draw attention away from other parts! Either way, statement jewellery when done tastefully will always make a (stylish) statement.

7. Blazers/ Jackets

BeFunky Collage1

The term Blazer made its debut in the 1800’s and since then its become in a staple in every closet around the world! It pulls any look together whether business or casual. In the earlies they were mainly navy or black but lucky for us we can get them in any colour or print your heart desires.

What are your favourite trends?

For Love (Of the Outfit)…

Valentine’s Day is a few days and everyone is busy planning their date night or day. But when all the planning is said and done you’re left in sheer terror at the fact that you have no clue what to wear. Also date night (or day) doesn’t have to be with a significant other, it can be with your girls like Leslie Knope’s Galentine’s Day or it could be an ultimate Treat Yo’self Day (yes clearly I love Parks and Rec). But don’t worry though, it doesn’t matter the event, let this blog post be your guide!

Some of us aren’t into the overly feminine (girly-girl if we shall) look, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have options. Pairing leather with an A-line skirt gives that perfect balance of sexy and flirty where its perfect for date night AND you’re still comfortable in your style. This way EVERYONE WINS!

vday

On the other hand some of us love form-fitting silhouettes and that is also PERFECT for your dinner date with the SO or even the gfs! It allows us to show of only *some* of our best assets and honestly some of us just really love getting all dolled up for that someone and there’s not a damn thing wrong with that.

vday1

For the more casual dates, good ole jeans are lovely and multipurpose in case you’re not exactly sure where you’re going but you know you don’t need to go full glam. Heels and accessories dress up any outfit once tastefully done, but if you’re a flats person of course, go with what you’re comfy with.

vday2

And, if you’re going outdoors like a day at the zoo or a picnic then something more simple might be ideal since its much much easier to move around in and in case of any unexpected messes that accompany the outdoors!vday3

Ultimately, whatever you wear just make sure you feel ABSOLUTELY AMAZING because that’s how your clothes should always make you feel! And also have a Happy Valentine’s Day !

My Christmas Wishlist!

So my absolute favourite time of year is fast approaching , basically even here, yet I’m still neck deepin assignments and my final year project. In the mean time though I’ll be day dreaming about the food, fun, festivities, ponche de creme and my favourite part- THE GIFTS!!!! Usually I don’t think too much into the gifts because well my birthday is about 2 weeks after Christmas so my friends and family could make up for it then (Kidding lol). But after seeing so much amazing stuff over the past few weeks I’m inclined to make a Christmas Wishlist, possibly my first wishlist since I was a child.

  1. Korporate Kouture: These earrings from Korporate Kouture caught my eye from the very first time. The thing with me though is I don’t usually wear large earrings but in the attempt to step out my earring comfort zone, I think these would be¬†a PRETTY GOOD start.

kk

2. Peta Odini: This jacket from Peta Odini has me all kinds of swooning! Don’t mind she’s a menswear designer, if you know me you’d know I wear men’s clothing with comfort and ease because some of it is just so damn stylish sometimes! When I first saw this pic on IG I was amazed and thought to myself no longer is fashion a woman’s game because these guys are giving us a run for our money. But if I get my hands on this jacket pretty sure the ball would still be in our court.

3. Tautology Design Studio: Tautology usually keeps me waiting with bated breath to see whats next because every piece intrigues me with the simplicity yet sheer beauty that is EVERY SINGLE PIECE! On sight of these earrings I shouted out my always approving “Yaaaaaaaaaas” , saved the picture and have been staring at it ever since.

4. No More Fashion Victims: So in my weekly stalking of No More Fashion Victims I can across this tweed top and had to just take a few moments to breathe. It caught me off guard because I wasn’t expecting this kinda slayage so early in my day. What delighted me even more is that its an ethical fashion line made right here in Trinidad & Tobago. Yeah Ikr i could tell you’re excited too!

image1 (4)

5. Le Gendre: I’m always in search of that statement piece because my clothing is usually minimal and this backpack and clutch (yeah I couldn’t choose one) need to be a part of my very tiny buy very effective collection of statement pieces. I could literally imagine myself out with my girls with one of these bags and people asking where did it come from.

image1 (5) image2 (2)

6.Tautology Design Studio: Yeah ofc by now everyone knows my jewellery obsession is rings. So its only natural that for Christmas I want to add more to my already large collection. I could see myself wearing these everyday and flailing my hands about as I speak ( as I usually do) so everyone could see this marvellousness I have the great opportunity to wear. (yeah I know marvellousness isn’t a word but you get my point right)

taut1

and the last thing on my wishlist but certainly not least

7. Charu Lochan Dass: Now I’ve been in love with every single thing this designer does from the beginning just that student budget has me batting in my crease (lol). But now that’s it Christmas I think my friends and family could have a collaborative efforts and make my dreams come true. Don’t you agree?

So now that you’ve seen what’s on my wishlist, has yours grown? It might have because these pieces are totally worth getting your hands on!

Every fashion lover’s favourite time of year is in full swing(Spring/Summer 2016 collections) . And while I wasn’t too impressed this time around I did see some interesting pieces and some I’ve seen before just in a different colour palette (Yes Balmain, I’m talking about you). From backstage to runway to street style, there’s never a dull moment in the most important fashion cities around the world!

You know I’m here for my Caribbean designers, Haitian Designer Stella Jean was ever present at Milan Fashion Week bringing so much life with her prints, colours and the stories told in her pieces.

Be Practical!

Every woman dreams of having the perfect wardrobe. The ability to open that closet door and the perfect outfit would be right there, just waiting for you accessories and all. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way and so we have the task of putting together complementary pieces day in, day out. BUT! it doesn’t have to be a task.

First things first, all wardrobes require practicality, if you’re living in Trinidad I’m pretty sure you don’t need a floor length fur coat.

But yes, on to practicality, if you spend more than 60% of your week in a formal work/office setting then your wardrobe may/ should reflect that. Therefore the other 40% should be a well put together weekend/ casual wardrobe that doesn’t make you feel like your’re still at the office. Of course the #1 must have here is a power suit! but before you go for black consider something in another neutral like navy blue or even white (like the set below). Outside of that be sure to have a great pair of jeans that fit you body type ( and yes you can also tailor jeans because the legs can be too long or the waist too big). When it comes to shoes if you’re stationary most of the time then heels are just fine, however if you move around quite a bit or there’s stairs that go on forever go for some ballet flats or kitten heels instead.

set8work

If most of your days are spent in a more casual setting your wardrobe should be practical for this. Try to stay away from pieces that are too heavy if you move around a lot. It also helps to get pieces that can easily transition from day to night or from one event to the next effortlessly. The top in the sets below is a good example of a versatile piece. A button down and a well-fitting dark wash jeans are also versatile as is cardigans and ballet flats. Accessories also become your best friend as they either make an outfit more casual or more formal based on how you style it. Have a few statement pieces such as a necklace and bracelet for casual occasions and perhaps a small layered necklace or one with a small pendant and a watch or simple bracelet for more formal affairs.

set6 tp2 tp3

University students also know the fine line that sometimes exists between school clothes and clothing for other occasions. But know it is definitely important to make the distinction between the two being a university student myself. Cardigans are a great choice as a lot of us have cold classrooms to deal with. Avoid things that are too low cut or too fitted or even too short ( its school you’re going to not a club). V neck t-shirts are also a great investment as they can last through the school year and to avoid it looking too homely you can accessorize with a cute necklace, great jean, some strappy sandals and a cardigan. A blazer is also a great investment for when we have those in class presentations or even internship positions, there’s always use for a blazer. Sundresses are also a cool, easy wearable piece for those warmer days and can be paired with sandals, ballet flats or for the daring a very low wedge. Because college life usually involves a lot of walking, running or stairs a pair of sneakers that you’re comfortable in and are also quite stylish is a great buy! Most importantly though, be comfortable because its the worst thing to be sitting in a lecture for 3 hours and your clothing is uncomfortable!

Fashion or Style?

It’s often been said that fashion and style are NOT the same thing, I myself strongly believe that they are not one in the same. Why? Well according to Cambridge Online Dictionary, Fashion is “a ‚Äčstyle¬†that is ‚Äčpopular¬†at a ‚Äčparticular time, ‚Äčespecially¬†in ‚Äčclothes, ‚Äčhair, ‚Äčmake-up, etc.” however, it defines ¬†Style as “a way of doing something, ‚Äčespecially¬†one that is ‚Äčtypical of a ‚Äčperson, ‚Äčgroup of ‚Äčpeople, ‚Äčplace, or ‚Äčperiod”

But, apart from textbook definition one can actually SEE the difference in the two. How? Welllllll some will claim to love fashion, and they will be the name chasers, brand peddlers, buying new clothes every season from designers kinda folk, but, you will not be impressed. You will not be impressed because the clothes wear them and they will NOT be wearing it. It will not speak to anyone in any form or fashion because it simply is not flattering doesn’t matter if it came straight off the runway from Givenchy or off the rack at Forever 21. This my friends is fashion, its simply what we wear, but has nothing to do with how it is worn. It carries nothing with it but the tag, the brand name or whatever else people think makes them look better in it. And let’s be honest we know a few of these or are realizing we are one. LOL.

Here’s an example:

amato-haute-couture-duba-fashion-forward-season-3                kat

Now on the left is the model in Amato Haute Couture and on the right there’s Kat Graham in the same dress. While Kat doesn’t look terrible if you study the pic a bit more you can tell the skirt length is wrong, she’s a petite girl so why drown her in all that skirt???? The placement of the belt is also lower than the runway look making her lose her shape instead of creating any kind of waist ūüôĀ

Moving on to style which is my favouriteeeeeeeeeeee ( I am an aspiring stylist after all). I truly believe STYLE IS WHO YOU ARE,it is your own personal brand and its both how you present and represent yourself. I always say, “Style is a non-verbal form of communication. What are you saying about yourself?” So yes style is about how you wear what you wear in terms of both confidence and wearing clothes that flatter your body! Many still have not grasped the concept (which is what I’m trying to help with) of understanding what looks good on you and what doesn’t.

My style as I said in a previous post is pretty laid back and simple, I often stick to neutrals and any colour I must wear pretty much goes into nailpolish and lipstick. On the rare day I have no idea what neutral to put on my body you will see me in a loud ass colour because it reflects how lost I feel about my wardrobe that day. Chances are it still fits by body the way it should and I feel good in it,so no love lost.

So with that being said, what is your style? Have you found it? Still trying to figure it out? Know what you like but still haven’t found the confidence to wear it?

Some are the quintessential girly girl and will like an outfit like this:

set

Some are more Boho Chic and prefer something like this:

set1

Others LOVE colour :

set2

While others are lovers of black and white:

set3

And it doesn’t end there:

set10 set9 set8 set6 set5 set4

So really and truly don’t be afraid of your style, explore it, live it and love it, but please don’t do it for the sake of fashion! Wear what makes you look good and feel great! Wear what makes you happy and makes you feel empowered because an outfit carries with it power like no other, TRUST ME! The right outfit makes you feel like you can take over the world and you deserve to feel that way every single day! ¬†And if you need help figuring out what that outfit can be, you can always hit me up because you know I GOT YOU! Till then- Navigate your life in style!
