My Thoughts: Suave for Natural Hair line

If you follow me on IG then I’m sure you’ve seen my recents posts (and exploration into video content) featuring the newly released Suave for Natural Hair line. Infused with coconut and shea butter the line is formulated especially for those of us with wavy, curly and coily hair types and comprises 6 products that I’ve been using for the last 2 1/2 – 3 months.

As everyone with natural hair knows, the road to finding products that work for you is long, filled with potholes and expensive AF!
Which raises the first point, how AFFORDABLE the line is. At Pennywise each product is about $40- $70, a Superpharm or other drugstore might run you up to $80 but I promise you it doesn’t get more expensive than that.
My hair is quite frizzy and has a lot of trouble retaining moisture, it can also be categorised as:
•3B
•Low Porosity
•Thick individual strands
•Has a mind of its own

Now let’s chat about how each product worked, and what rating I gave it.

Sulfate-free Cleansing Shampoo- ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

According to Suave’s website, this shampoo:
•Gently cleanses and moisturizes
•Sulfate-Free formula
•Ideal for curly to coily hair

And they’re right, it is super gentle and doesn’t strip your hair to the point where it feels like dry and hay-like. However, for me, it took about 3 shampoos in one wash session before my hair felt as though it was clean. Now I’m not a person who typically uses a lot of products in my hair and I wash weekly so there isn’t time or product to have buildup. It took quite a bit of work for the shampoo to feel as though it worked and because of this I had to give it three stars. (But it did make finger detangling easy)

Moisturising Curl Conditioner -⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

For the conditioner, it:
•Deeply moisturizes and provides maximum slip
•Detangles and softens curls
•Tames frizz while enhancing shine
•Ideal for wavy, curly and coily hair

If you comb your hair out in the bathroom then you’d surely enjoy this conditioner like I did. There’s a lot of slip which made combing my hair out super easy and immediately afterward my hair did feel softer and remained manageable and untangled before I began the next steps of adding leave-in, curl defining cream and gel and that’s why it gets a 4 from me!

Nourish & Strengthen Leave-in Conditioner- ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

This product:
•Deep treatment for nourished coils
•Works to help protect from styling damage
•Ideal for coily hair
After conditioning I applied this to my wet hair and one thing that’s absolute is how soft my hair felt after applying. It also didn’t weigh my hair down like other leave-ins I’ve used and the scent is really light (because as you all have heard a million times before I really dislike heavily scented products). The main reason I gave this product a three is, it didn’t have a lasting effect on my hair, so while it remained soft, it didn’t remain quite moisturised. ( But like I said, my hair has a major problem retaining moisture so this wasn’t going to be fixed overnight)

Cream Detangler Spray- ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

This works by:
•Detangles on wet hair
•Calms frizz on dry hair
•Ideal for wavy, curly and coily hair

Since I usually detangle in the shower, I used this product to revive my hair and tame the frizz. It worked quickly to help detangle but I did need a lot of it given how stubborn my hair itself is. Given how much of the product I had to use to get it work is what made me give it a 3.

Curl Defining Cream- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

The Curl Defining Cream:
•Enhances natural curl pattern
•Ideal for wavy to curly hair
•Adds softness and shine

Undoubtedly, this is my favourite product in the line. And, coupled with the Define & Shine Serum Gel, made my morning hair routine quick and easy. It did help my hair feel moisturized and in terms of enhancing curl pattern worked best when used with the serum since I did try using it alone a few times and that didn’t work out too great as my hair became frizzy in a few hours. In spite of the frizz those few times, the one constant with this, and all of the other products, my hair was super soft so it gets a 4.

Define & Shine Serum Gel-⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

This product:
•Locks-in moisture for touchable curls
•Holds curl shape with brilliant shine
•Ideal for wavy hair

Due to wash and go’s being my forte, a defining product is the secret weapon in my arsenal. And the Suave Define & Shine Serum, helped give me major definition but without my hair feeling heavy or getting crunchy which happens with regular gels. Like my comment above, it worked best with the Curl Defining Cream for a more defined wash and go and that’s a 4 from me.

Collectively, for the price, product sizes (only the serum is 4.75oz, the others are 12-16oz) and the fact that through using all of these products my hair retained softness, it’s a great buy especially if you’re still learning what works and what doesn’t for your hair. It took my hair about 3-4 tries before warming up to these products so it may be a matter of your hair has to get used to the product and its ingredients and definitely this lined worked perfectly together as I did try in between to mix and match with some other products.

Have you tried this? Tell me how it went for you?
(Please note I received this line from Suave to review)

Take Me Back- St.Lucia!

Have you ever been to a place where everyone you walk past is the most pleasant person in the world? That’s St.Lucia.

Known for it’s twin volcanic peaks, the Pitons, rising straight from the sea to over 2500ft skirted by the fishing port of Soufriere, St.Lucia is plastered with rich, mesmerizing vegetation from coast to coast. Between the journey  from George F.L Charles Airport,me trying not to puke my guts out ( I have the worst motion sickness) and the Coconut Bay Beach Resort, St.Lucia reminds you of the Caribbean island you dream about when you’re from the outside looking in.

(Yes I am from Trinidad and Tobago but my life is overrun with highways, freshly constructed buildings and the only greenery I see is the weeds my dogs decide to uproot and drag around my yard). Not long after leaving the airport we headed uphill to get this amazing view of the cruise ship port which I must admit I can’t remember the name(maybe because I was so mesmerized) but you get the point from the pic right?

So after spending an hour in the taxi trying to contain anything I may have eaten for that morning, we got to Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa which is located in Vieux Fort along St.Lucia’s south coast and thankfully just 5 mins from the Hewanorra International Airport (for when it was time to go home). For this really short vacation the intention was to do some exploring especially at the much talked about Sulphur Springs, however my body thoroughly convinced me that what it needed was to just chill the eff out and with 5 pools and 7 bars it was the easiest task I’ve ever had to undertake. Somehow my SO and I ended up in a room with two beds (we still can’t recall if we intentionally did that lol) but the view of pathways and coconut trees we weren’t bothered in the least.

If you’re not too enthused by kids running and screaming there’s an entire wing I believe its the Harmony wing, with a pool, bar and suntrackers (my favourite thing about CBay) dedicated to adults only. If you’re looking for a boozy vacay with great cocktails and even greater bartenders then CBay holds your best interest at heart. Called Coconut Bay Beach Resort AND SPA I had a super relaxing evening at Kai Mer- indulging in a Botanical Mini Facial and Kai Mer Tranquility ( I fell asleep for both and if you know me personally you know I don’t just fall asleep any and anywhere). Me falling asleep should indicate just how relaxing both were so I’d absolutely recommend Kai Mer!

Here’s the bar!(this one is by the adult pool, there’s a bunch more)

Here’s the Sun Trackers! (they’re able to spin around so you can face where you want)

On the side where noise makers( kids lol) are allowed there’s a lazy river and two fun as a mofo water slides if you’re looking for some excitement. This side also houses a swim up bar with a Kid’s Mocktail menu for the kiddies, but lemme tell you the cocktails are so fruity and delicious you get caught up really easily.

Apart from the fun, food is a priority. So, in addition to the buffet restaurant available for breakfast, lunch and dinner there’s three other specialty restaurants at the resort that you can make dinner reservations for, and the Jerk Treehouse (see pic for menu). ‘Calabash’ offering Creole and Caribbean cuisine was the pick for one of these very short nights (see pic on left below) and the steak was divine.

Though my lazy behind never left the hotel I don’t regret it one bit. because of the pure relaxation, friendly staff and soothing environment C-Bay offers I’d recommend it to anyone!

The Best Trends (Ever)!

Once in a while a trend comes along that you NEVER EVER want to get rid of, there’s also those trends that make you want to light it on fire at first glance! Here’s some of the trends we (I) never want to go away! Lucky for me all are wearable in the Caribbean :

1.The Button Down

BeFunky Collage2

As simple as it seems, the button down is a classic and a closet staple for both guys and girls. It can be long sleeved, short sleeved, buttoned at the front or back, solid or prints, casual, dressed up, peter pan collar, frilled collar . Whatever it is, the button down can do it, need I say more?A simple white button down is a MUST HAVE btw…

2. Jumpsuits

Solange-Knowles

I’ve never met a jumpsuit I didn’t like, its made its way to red carpets, weddings, the office, the club. You name it the jumpsuit’s been there and shows no sign of leaving us and I’m glad for that.  Its truly the perfect go to outfit when you can’t figure out what to wear, the hardest part might be choosing your favourite one!

3. Ballet Flats

Whatever your personal style is, there’s a pair of ballet flats out there made just for you. And you can’t deny how comfy they are because heels all the time can be a pain in the a**, its the best combo of comfy and chic so you never have to compromise either!

4. The Little Black Dress

BeFunky Collage3

The LBD and timeless go hand in hand, and if you don’t own one, well, you know what to do. Seriously, it will never ever go out of style and appropriate for any and every occasion possible! From barely there like J.lo to a dress you can wear at the office, a LBD won’t disappoint.

5. Boyfriend Jeans

From its appearance circa 2005 (remember Rihanna’s “Pon D Replay”) there’s no sign of the trend  going away and honestly why should it? It has a weird didn’t try all that hard to look this good appeal that I love and my favourite fashion bloggers (Micah and Julie) make me love it even more. And yes, bf jeans do come in unripped versions.

6. Statement Jewellery

4-colors-good-quality-NEW-style-Fashion-Vintage-Unique-collar-pendant-Chunky-Necklace-Statement-Jewelry-for.jpg_640x640earring rings

This dates back to ancient Egypt where they adorned themselves in cuff bracelets, statement necklaces and flashy dangling earrings. Fastforward to the 2016 and not much has changed, but now its used to liven up an otherwise not so lively outfit or to draw attention away from other parts! Either way, statement jewellery when done tastefully will always make a (stylish) statement.

7. Blazers/ Jackets

BeFunky Collage1

The term Blazer made its debut in the 1800’s and since then its become in a staple in every closet around the world! It pulls any look together whether business or casual. In the earlies they were mainly navy or black but lucky for us we can get them in any colour or print your heart desires.

What are your favourite trends?
